A fatality resulted from a crash that closed southbound lanes of I-57 at Mattoon for several hours Wednesday.

Illinois State Police report the crash occurred just after 1:20pm about a mile east of the Lake Land College interchange. The crash involved two commercial motor vehicles.

Police said the driver and a passenger in the first vehicle were taken for treatment, and the driver later died of their injuries.

The roadway was shut down and not reopened until just after 10pm.

State Police also reported that it was a single-vehicle crash that caused travel problems just before 3:30pm Wednesday.

A truck-tractor semi-trailer was involved in the crash on the interstate east of the US Route 45 interchange at Effingham.

That crash could have been behind a traffic tie-up we heard about on US Route 40 between Effingham and Greenup during that time. No other information was available from authorities.
