Fire did considerable damage to a house in Altamont Monday afternoon.

The call to 107 South Main came about 5:30pm. Altamont Fire Chief Jon Becker said the home is owned by Trevor Taylor, and that the residents are Joseph Light and family.

Firefighters were still on scene after 6pm.

Becker said the first crew on scene found fire projecting out the front window toward the street. The crew knocked down the fire, but when they opened the front door, Becker said the fire "flashed on them". No firefighters were injured.

While all of the human occupants escaped uninjured, two cats did not fare as well. One cat was recovered alive, but the other was not as fortunate.

Altamont firefighters were joined on scene by Shumway and St. Elmo fire companies, while Brownstown firefighters staffed the Altamont station in the event of another call. Also assisting were Altamont police, Rural Med EMS and A-1 Ambulance, and City of Altamont Electric Department.
