The Cowden-Herrick Board of Education welcomed a new member at this month's meeting.

Travis Elliott was sworn in as a board member.

Board members approved a bid for renovations to the elementary building. Grunloh Construction of Effingham will do the work for $487,000.

Cowden-Herrick Superintendent Seth Schuler said the work will include replacing railings and guard rails this summer, installing a fire-rated wall in August, renovating the locker rooms and creating storage space this fall, and replacing all interior classroom doors and frames next summer. Schuler said the project will be paid for with a combination of health and life safety funds and 1% sales tax revenue.

The Board approved an amended budget for the current school year, and also approved the student handbooks and set student fees for the coming school year.

Board members also approved the purchase of 8th grade Social Studies curriculum, accepted the resignation of Diana (Missy) Dunaway, and approved a Family and Medical Leave Act leave for Lesley Cronin starting August 16.
