Altamont city council members Monday approved one special use permit, but denied another request.

The permit that was granted is for a manufactured home at 312 A North 8th Street, and the one that was denied was for a manufactured home at 301 South Edwards Street. The thought behind the permit that was denied is that the property is near a commercial area.

The Council approved a variance for a side yard setback for a property at 412 South 8th Street, to allow construction of an addition to the home there. Council members also appointed Mike Klitzing to fill a vacancy on the Zoning Board. Another vacancy still needs filled.

The Council approved the Effingham County Fair Parade on July 30, allocated $69,800 in motor fuel tax funds for street maintenance, and voted to utilize another $79,895 in motor fuel tax money to replace sidewalks on 3rd Street from Washington to Division Streets.

Council members purchased a 2007 model street sweeper for $25,000, purchased a transformer for the South Point Subdivision sanitary lift station for $12,000, and extended an option on 20 acres of land owned by FCC Limited Partnership for another year before deciding whether to purchase the parcel.

The Council also learned that the city has received a lead service grant for $34,951. The funds will help pay for the survey of lead water lines in Altamont.
