Would-Be Thieves Attempt to Steal ATM in Altamont

Authorities are investigating an attempt to steal an ATM in Altamont early Wednesday morning.

Altamont Police Chief Alan Heiens said the incident occurrred about 3am. The police report indicates that three individuals stole a pickup truck owned by The Equity and drove to Peoples Bank and Trust in Altamont. The trio attempted to steal the ATM, but were unsuccessful. The would-be thieves ripped the bumper off the pickup truck in their attempts to free the ATM. 

Chief Heiens said the trio abandoned the pickup truck a short distance away from the bank and left the scene.

Altamont City Police, Effingham County Sheriff's Department, Effingham City Police and Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation all assisted at the scene.
