A local resident has been placed on four years' probation and must serve 180 days in jail after being found guilty of aggravated criminal sexual abuse involving a victim under age 13.

46-year-old Derek Schorman of Montrose was also fined $5,000 plus assessments, and must have no contact with the victim or her residence.

Schorman was arrested in 2020. He was found guilty at a jury trial in January of this year.

While the defense sought the probation, the Effingham County State's Attorney's Office sought five years in prison. Judge Allan Lolie decided on probation and jail time for Schorman.

Schorman is also charged with similar offenses in Jasper County.
