The City of Effingham has been working to maintain the structural soundness and the usefulness of Village Square Mall, and further steps are soon to be taken.

Effingham City Administrator Steve Miller said this week that "the City has spent approximately $1 million to meet building and life safety codes" at the mall. Miller said, "An additional lien will be filed with the County soon."

Under the lien, the City can perform the corrective work at the mall, and then can take steps to recover the cost of the repairs.

Meanwhile, there continues to be interest from businesses interested in locating in the mall. Miller said interested parties should contact Todd Hull or Sasha Althoff in the city's Economic Development office.

Miller said the $1 million spent on the mall is a sizable amount, but wants citizens to know where things stand. He said, "It's their money."
