Cumberland school board members have approved installing a geothermal heating and cooling system.

Board members heard that the system will provide energy cost savings. The upfront cost for the system is $3,885,373, but the net cost after federal funds are utilized will be $950,679. The project cost savings are $20,000 to $30,000 per year.

The system design, from Veregy, will include every classroom, the cafeteria and both gymnasiums. Boilers and window air conditioners will no longer be used.

80 300-foot-deep wells will be dug on the west side of campus to facilitate the system, which will serve the elementary and middle school building.

The Board also voted to declare the district's intention to issue $2.5 million in working cash fund bonds to make such funds available.

The Cumberland board also accepted the resignation of Kylee Booth as high school head volleyball coach.
