Sunday was an interesting day in the City of Altamont.

The incident began when a crossarm at the substation near the Avena Road between St. Elmo and Brownstown came loose and twisted in the strong winds late Sunday morning. The movement of the crossarm caused a spark that resulted in a field fire. The movement of the crossarm also resulted in an electrical outage that affected both St. Elmo and Altamont.

Altamont City Clerk Sarah Stephen said the city operated on generators from roughly 10:30am to 2pm while repairs were made.

As to the field fire, local farmer Tom Roepke cut a fire line to keep the fire from spreading.
