Interstate 70 east of Montrose was open again in both directions as of 4pm Friday.

Both eastbound lanes were closed for several hours following a crash involving two semis at 4:45am, two miles east of Montrose.

While crews were working to address that crash, a motorist in the westbound lanes rear-ended another vehicle while observing the eastbound incident. Eventually, two cars and two more semis were involved in the westbound crash.

Authorities said that since they couldn't have traffic shut down in both directions, they ended their work on the eastbound crash and went to work on the westbound accident.

Once the westbound scene was cleared, crews went back to work on the eastbound accident.

Montrose Fire Protection District Chief Chris Overbeck said eastbound traffic was "crawling" on the interstate past Montrose, but moving.

No details on either crash are available yet.
