Altamont city council members Monday contracted with 120 Water to conduct a lead and copper water line inventory.

The work, which will not cost in excess of $18,000, authorizes 120 Water to send out survey cards to Altamont residents to find out whether they have lead or copper or plastic water lines. The survey must be completed by the end of 2024. If people don't respond within the required time, a second survey card will be sent. If that doesn't get enough responses, folks will go door-to-door to get the information. If someone doesn't know what type of lines they have at their property, they can contact the City of Altamont office.

The Council also agreed to proceed with bid advertising and easements for water line replacement on 500th and 900th Avenue. It's a stretch of road in the rural area that serves 16 water customers. The goal is to replace the current water line with a six-inch line to provide better service.

The Council authorized the sale of the lot at 301 South Edwards, and discussed increasing the minimum water rate at the November meeting. Also approved was a payment to Visu-Sewer for sewer main lining around the city.

Council members approved a request by the Altamont American Legion post to properly dispose of unserviceable American flags at Schmidt Park on Novemer 5. The Council also discussed sidewalk improvements on North 3rd Street in front of Kremer Pharmacy and Dr. Opilka's office.
