(AN EFFINGHAM FIREFIGHTER MOVES INTO THE AREA OF THE FIRE AT QUAD GRAPHICS THURSDAY)

Local firefighters were called to Quad Graphics in the Effingham Business Park just after noon Thursday.

Effingham Assistant Fire Chief Matt Kulesza said the problem originated in a dust collector bag cylinder. With the volume of paper used at the factory, a lot of dust is created and jams can occur that result in fires. The problem can also be caused by a bearing going bad that can ignite some of the dust. Kulesza said it's not certain what the cause of the fire was in this case.

Damage was minimal if any, and no one was injured. The plant was evacuated as a precaution.

Quad Graphics has its offices off South Banker, as well as a plant. This fire was at the plant along Niccum Avenue. As a precaution, a call is made to several fire companies to assist at a fire at a plant. Teutopolis and Shumway firefighters assisted Effingham firefighters at the scene, while crews from Altamont and Dieterich staffed the Effingham stations in case of another call.
