Illinois State Police released information over the weekend on a collision Wednesday afternoon south of Effingham that involved four vehicles.

The names of the drivers involved were not made available.

The crash happened just after 2pm on I-57 northbound, about two miles south of Effingham. State police said a work truck equipped with an impact attenuator on back was on the left shoulder of the interstate, advising travelers that the left lane was closed ahead. All traffic was being merged to the right lane due to striping taking place in the left lane. An approaching vehicle failed to reduce speed and struck the impact attenuator in the rear bumper. After impact, the approaching vehicle came to rest in the right lane facing southbound. Another oncoming vehicle was northbound in the right lane and struck the approaching vehicle, leaving debris. A fourth vehicle struck the debris.

The driver of the work truck and the driver of the approaching vehicle were transported by ambulance to area hospitals with non life threatening injuries. The drivers of the other two vehicles refused medical attention.

The driver of the approaching vehicle was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid the crash.
