Ground was broken Friday afternoon for the Wright Family Center in Dieterich.

The facility will be constructed across the street to the east from Dieterich Elementary School. Work will begin soon, since under terms of the grant funding received on the project, the facility is to be ready to open in October 2023.

The facility will have one large multi-use court with a retractable dividing curtain that can be converted to two multi-use courts. Portable bleachers will make this a very flexible gym space. In addition to basketball, these courts will also be striped for pickleball and volleyball. The facility will have cardio and weight equipment, a two-lane walking track around the gym, and three community rooms to allow for non-sport recreation opportunities like card and quilting tables, fitness classes, birthday parties, art programs, Kinder music, and other educational classes and social gatherings.

The other major component of the center is a daycare center. That portion of the center could not be funded through a grant, so private funds are being raised to finance that part of the project.

The Wright family purchased naming rights for the center earlier this year in honor of Tom and John Wright's father, Cedric, who died in December. We had the opportunity to talk with Tom and John following the groundbreaking ceremony...

Tom Wright spoke during the ceremony, as did Dieterich Mayor Brad Hardiek, Tom Niebrugge of Dieterich Bank, Dieterich Community Development Corporation Secretary Ernest Garbe and others.
