The situation is not good if you need ambulance service in the Toledo community.

As of September 1st, the Toledo Ambulance Service is temporarily shut down due to a lack of staffing.

Toledo Ambulance Board President Robert Swearingen said when he started on the board in 1983, it was an all-volunteer service. Through the years, the service had to start paying to keep the service staffed, then had to hire ambulance attendants.

Swearingen said they need two full-time paramedics and two full-time basics to re-open the service. Anyone interested is asked to phone Swearingen at 217-962-0315.

Currently, the Greenup and Neoga ambulance services are splitting the Toledo territory to insure there is coverage available, but Swearingen said Greenup is down to one crew so, if a call occurs in Greenup's territory, a call in the Toledo territory will have to be served by another agency.
