We reported earlier that Effingham City Police Officer David Myers was honored at Tuesday's Effingham City Council meeting as the city's Employee of the Quarter.

In the letter of nomination submitted by fellow police department staffer Sandy Gillet, Myers was recognized for actions taken the evening of May 24. Gillet wrote that Myers, while on a separate call for service, observed a fire in a multi-occupant apartment building and took immediate action. Myers alerted dispatch to send the fire department, attempted to utilize an extinguisher to put out the fire, and then cleared the apartment building of all occupants.

When no contact was made with any occupants in two separate apartments, Officer Myers made forcible entry into one of the apartments directly above the fire and found a woman and young child whom he escorted safety.

Gillet wrote the actions taken by Officer Myers "showed quick decision-making skills, courage despite the enormous risk to himself, and efffective teamwork with his fellow officer Matt Simpson. Because of his valor, Gillet wrote, no injury came to either the woman or child, or any other resident of the apartment complex.

The letter of nomination concluded "Officer Myers went above and beyond his call to duty and deserves to be recognized for his quick, selfless actions which undoubtedly saved both life and property."
