A Sigel man was rescued from flood waters northwest of Effingham Tuesday evening.

20-year-old Zachary Hille ended up stranded on a high spot between the waters on 1200th Street, just north of Illinois Routes 32/33. The Effingham County Dive Rescue Team was summoned at 5:42pm.

Hille told authorities he had driven through the water, not realizing how deep it was and upon reaching high ground, decided to stop. Team members were able to safely escort Hille back to his waiting family. Hille was not injured. Dive Team Assistant Commander Jeremy Kyle said Hille's decision not to go through any further flood waters likely prevented any injury to him or damage to his vehicle.

Kyle said due to the depth and coverage of the flood waters, the vehicle will be recovered later when the waters recede. The Dive Rescue Team spent approximately 30 minutes on scene.

The Effingham Dive Rescue Team urges motorists to "Turn Around, Don't Drown" and to never drive on flooded roadways.
