Altamont city council members are moving ahead with the demolition of two residential structures.

Council members this week purchased a parcel at 301 South Edwards that was the scene of a major residential fire over the winter. The City obtained ownership of the parcel to get the lot cleaned up.

The Council also awarded bids to R&H Plumbing and Heating of Altamont for the demolition of the South Edwards property and a property at 301 South Main. The Edwards property project will cost $17,600 while the Main Street project will cost $12,350.

Altamont Council members reviewed the fiscal year appropriations ordinance totaling $9,823,265. That's more than $1.3 million more than last year. Much of the increase is due to the South Point residential subdivision project, and a sewer replacement project in the northwest part of the city.

The Council made the final payment to R&H of $101,614.50 for the south sanitary force main replacement project. The work is designed to accommodate both residential and commercial growth in the area south of the interstate.

Altamont council members also agreed to close Second Street from Main to Washington on Monday night, July 18th. The closing is for an event known as Monday Night Madness, which will run from 5 to 8pm. Store specials and a porkburger sale will be part of the evening's activities.
