$30.3 million in grants have been announced for 87 local park projects that will help communities acquire open space and develop and improve recreational facilities throughout Illinois.
The awards include $400,000 for Phase II of the Lake Sara Pearson Peninsula Park development. The project will eventually involve four to five phases. The first phase involved a playground by the beach, a disc golf course, and a handicapped accessible fishing dock. The Effingham Sunrise Rotary Club contributed a bocce ball court to the development.
Two other area projects were funded.
The City of Shelbyville will receive $324,000 for a ballfield enhancement project.
The Village of Strasburg will receive $318,000 for a park renovation effort.
