Shelby County murder suspect Deven Barger faces additional charges for alleged actions against a correctional officer.

The 27-year-old Barger is being held in Shelby County Jail on charges of first degree murder and intentional homicide of an unborn child. He's accused of the fatal shooting of his girlfriend at a house in Shelbyville in July 2019. The wound also caused the death of the unborn child the woman was carrying. A pursuit followed that traveled into Effingham County and finally ended near Taylorville.

The new charges stem from June 24, when Barger was being moved to a different cell and allegedly spat in the face and mouth of a correctional officer, then moved away from the officer and allegedly resulted in the officer being injured.

Barger is next due in Shelby County Circuit Court on the original charges and the new counts on August 15.
