(THE RUG IN QUESTION)

Serious damage was avoided in a mobile home fire Monday morning on Effingham's south side.

Firefighters were summoned shortly after 9am to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Larry McFall at 83 Four Seasons Mobile Home Park.

According to Effingham Assistant Fire Chief Matt Kulesza McFall told him he lost "the cherry off his cigarette". McFall couldn't locate the fire and assumed it had gone out. He went outside to do his watering and in the meantime, the mobile home filled with smoke. The fire off the cigarette had fallen onto an area rug and it started smoking.

Effingham police arrived and put the fire out with an extinguisher. Firefighters then used fans to remove the smoke from the structure.

Kulesza said the smoke detectors inside the mobile home were working. No one was injured.
