Memorial Day 2022 Observed Throughout the Area

Memorial Day was observed at locations across the nation over the past weekend.

That included the annual observance in Altamont at Union Cemetery. The ceremony followed a parade that ran from Altamont Community High School to downtown and then north to the cemetery. 

Altamont businessman Gerald White, Jr. was the featured speaker. His brief, but appropriate remarks touched on those who paid the ultimate price to preserve our nation's freedom. White alluded to the date of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, where noted orator Edward Everett spoke for three hours, whereas the president spoke for three minutes. He took his cue from which speech has stood the test of time as his guide.

Similar ceremonies were held at three locations in Effingham, as well as in Dieterich and a number of other area communities.
