Effingham County high school students got to experience city and county government Thursday on Law Day 2022.

The event is sponsored nationally by the Elks and locally by Effingham Elks Lodge #1016. The Lodge sponsored a noon lunch for all of the participants at which Effingham County Sheriff Paul Kuhns served as guest speaker.

The day included tours, job shadowing opportunities, and time on the firing range. The students were paired with those in city and county government to get a better idea about what goes on day-to-day in local government service.

Among those hosting students Thursday was Effingham County Board Chairman Jim Niemann, who was a student participant in Law Day when he was a high school senior. He said at the time he never thought he'd serve in local government. He is not seeking re-election to the Board after serving since 2010.

All serving said it's a unique opportunity and more than one said be sure to at least vote every time there's an election, or don't complain about the government you get or the decisions they make.
