Jobless Numbers Better in March

Effingham County's unemployment rate in March was 3.2%, down from 4.7% in March 2021. Figures were released by the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

Total nonfarm employment in March 2022 in the Effingham area increased by 1,700 compared to the previous year.

Employment gains were posted in Leisure and Hospitality (425), Construction (350), Manufacturing (300), Government (225) Educational and Health Services (225), Professional and Business Services (100), Financial Activities (75), and Other Services (25). No change was reported in Natural Resources and Mining.

Employment declined in Trade, Transportation and Utilities (25), and Information (25). 

Area counties and their rates: Coles--4.3%, down from 5.6%; Cumberland--3.7%, down from 5.2%; Shelby--4%, down from 5%; Clay--5%, down from 6.3%; Fayette--4.7%, down from 6.4%; and Jasper--3.8%, down from 5.5%.
