Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul Friday filed a motion with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission asking that Dynegy, Incorporated be required to refund more than approximately $428 million to customers in central and southern Illinois. The allegation is that Dynegy allegedly manipulated energy auction rules in 2015.

Dynegy's parent company, Vistra Energy, owns the Newton power plant.

Raoul alleges that the flawed energy auction caused electricity prices for Ameren customers to unnecessarily increase by close to 900% over the previous year's auctions. This resulted in an annual increase of $131 for an average residential Ameren customer.

Vistra Energy acquired Dynegy in 2018.
