A rescue transport van ran off Interstate 57 near the Edgewood exit early Saturday morning.

A Facebook post indicates that the van was struck by a chunk of ice that came off a passing semi. The impact caused the van, which was carrying around 50 cats and dogs, to flip over. No serious injuries were reported to either the humans or the animals in the van.

The Effingham County Sheriff's Department assisted at the scene and summoned area animal enthusiasts who provided shelter and care for the animals. The humans aboard were checked out and are resting up after their overnight ordeal.
