Effingham city officials recently amended the city zoning ordinance to allow general commercial businesses to obtain a special use permit to operate in a highway commercial zone.

One of the first such utilizations of the change was a part of Tuesday's Effingham City Plan Commission meeting.

Lizbeth Gonzalez is petitioning for a special use permit to operate what is now Lupita's Mexican Store at 612 West Fayette Avenue at 1509 West Fayette Avenue. That project would be in conjunction with using the rear of the building at 1509 to assemble kits for carports and similar structures.

Gonzalez said the project will take some time to complete as they plan to expand the store's offerings at the new location.

The Plan Commission voted to recommend the City Council grant the special use permit.

Commission members also voted to recommend the Council approve two subdivision plats.

One is for the first addition to Grunloh Subdivision on North 3rd Street, involving an additional office building; the other is for Butcher Block Subdivision, involving the former John Boos and Company location at East Fayette Avenue and First Street, which will include a new home for Homewood Grill.

The Plan Commission also approved a site plan for the first addition to Grunloh Subdivision.
