Two local efforts to benefit those suffering losses from Friday night's severe storms bore much fruit thanks to area residents.

We received information Tuesday evening that the John Preston family has had all of its needs met in the aftermath of losing their home outside Herrick from the tornado that struck that area. Preston's friend Tyler Shab organized the relief effort and secured a semi trailer provided by Ed Lewis Trucking that was placed beneath the Hobby Lobby sign along Keller Drive in Effingham.

Shab had said that if items are collected beyond the needs of the Preston family, they would give the additional items to other people-helping efforts. That's why the truck will still be parked at Hobby Lobby until 6pm today.

Meanwhile, the effort for the Prestons was dovetailed with another local project. The students and staff at Buckeye Friends School outside Effingham headed for Mayfield, Kentucky, today to donate items collected for that community devastated by the series of storms. The Buckeye group stopped by Hobby Lobby to see what items not needed by the Prestons could be taken to Kentucky to help people there.
