The National Weather Service says it was indeed a tornado that hit the Windsor and Gays areas Friday night.

The twister struck right about 10pm and is being rated an EF2 with estimated peak winds of 125MPH.

The tornado traveled 15.8 miles from the Windsor community through Gays and over to near Mattoon's west side. The path of the tornado grew as wide as 200 yards.

Officials are still assessing the damage, but there were reports of power lines down on Illinois Route 16, overturned vehicles, damaged buildings and a propane leak, all of that centered in Gays, which is located between Windsor and Mattoon.

National Weather crews have also determined EF2 damage near Herrick in Shelby County. Surveys are ongoing.

Another tornado touched down southwest of Virginia, in Cass County. Several farm buildings were demolished and a house had significant damage done to its roof. One horse was killed and another was injured. More than a dozen power poles were damaged and there was much tree damage.
