Effingham Public Library board members have approved the library's tax levy for the coming fiscal year, and it appears the library will have a lower tax rate.

Library Director Amanda McKay said an increase in the community's equalized assessed valuation should allow a reduction in the tax rate and still realize an increase in revenue.

Under current practice, the library board establishes its levy, which then becomes a part of the city's overall levy.

The Board also continued its monthly practice of reviewing one library policy. This month, it was the citizen participation policy. It was agreed to continue giving the chairman the authority not to deny anyone access.

McKay said the Board plans to continue studying whether there needs to be an adjustment in hours of operation. She said that attendance at the library drops off in the evening hours, particularly on Fridays. An adjustment in hours of operation could make more staff members available to work during busier times of the week.
