Newton Woman Critically Injured in Saturday ATV Crash

A Newton woman was critically injured in an ATV crash in Jasper County Saturday afternoon.

The crash occurred at 5:09pm along a rural road east of Illinois 130.

State police say an ATV operated by 26-year-old Derek Stanciu of Newton ran off the roadway.  While Stanciu attempted to get the ATV back onto the roadway, a passenger on the unit, 25-year-old Andrea Weiler of Newton, was thrown off the unit.

Weiler was first taken to St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham and then was taken to Carle Hospital in Urbana.  State police say at the time that Weiler was listed in critical condition.

Stanciu was cited for DUI, illegal transportation of liquor, improper lane usage and improper operating an ATV on the roadway.
