Chris Palmer 2021

Fayette County will be dealing with the loss of their second sheriff this year.

Sheriff Chris Palmer has submitted his letter of resignation. Palmer's resignation is effective October 1. Palmer is citing the police reform legislation passed by the Illinois General Assembly this spring as the reason for his stepping down.

Palmer was just appointed sheriff April 1, succeeding Chris Smith, who retired early.

Palmer joins sheriffs in Effingham, Marion, Shelby, Clinton, Wayne and Piatt counties who have resigned.

Sheriffs will next be elected in 2022.
