Two Arrests for Drugs Sunday Morning in Effingham

Two arrests on drug charges were made in Effingham on Sunday morning.

The Effingham County Sheriff's Office, with the assistance of the Effingham City Police Department and the Southeastern Illinois Drug Task Force, served a search warrant at an apartment on Hillside Drive in Effingham. At 8:15am, members of the Effingham City/County Special Response Team secured the residence and located several items of drug paraphernalia. 

Arrested at the apartment was Matthew J. McWhorter, who resides at the apartment, on counts of possession of methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Also arrested was Daniel E. Martin of Beecher City on counts of possession of hypodermic needles, possession of methamphetamine, bringing contraband into a penal institution, obstructing a police officer, resisting a correctional officer, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Effingham County Sheriff Paul Kuhns and Effingham City Police Chief Jason McFarland were pleased with the success of the operation, and said they were pleased with how well the City and County support each other and work together for the benefit of the community.

McWhorter and Martin were in court Tuesday. McWhorter is due back in court Wednesday, while Martin is due back in court on August 10. Bond for each defendant was set at $150,000.
