Fire left a house in Altamont a total loss Wednesday.

The fire was reported at 5:43pm at the home of the Jayson Williams family. The home is located at 106 South Ewing, just west across the street from the Altamont School District offices.

Altamont Fire Chief Jon Becker said Williams told him that he had just finished mowing and had placed the lawn mower inside the garage. Williams and his wife were in the house when they smelled smoke. They checked and found the fire was well underway. Williams and his wife got out of the house safely. Their daughters were nearby, but not at home at the time of the fire.

Becker said the fire got into the attic space. He said there was smoke and water damage throughout the remainder of the house, and that the house is a total loss. No one was injured.

Altamont firefighters were back at the scene this morning making sure the fire was completely out. Becker said the Fire Marshal's Office would not be called in as there was nothing to indicate the fire was suspicious in nature.
