Mattoon Man Killed in Interstate Crash

A Mattoon man is dead following a crash on I-57.

Illinois State Police say the crash occurred about 4:30pm Sunday near Mile Marker 188, between the Illinois Route 16 and Lake Land College interchanges. 

A vehicle driven by a 54-year-old Centralia woman was stopped on the shoulder of the road with hazard lights on due to severe weather. The Mattoon man, 21-year-old Mehdi Mourad, was a firefighter who was responding in his personal vehicle to a crash at the Lake Land interchange. While heading to the crash, Mourad lost control of his vehicle and rear-ended the stopped vehicle.

Authorities say Mourad became entrapped in his vehicle and had to be extricated. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
