Altamont city council members voted this week in favor of a variance for an accessory structure in the downtown area.

The Council voted to allow a hoop building to be placed next to The Whistlestop at 118 North Second Street. The matter was discussed at the Council's previous meeting, but a vote was delayed until the full Council was on hand.

Council members, though, did not approve the use of side-by-sides within the city limits. The matter died when no one made a motion to approve use of the vehicles. Council members voiced concerns over the noise and speed of the side-by-sides, as well as the tires that could damage asphalt roadways in hot weather.

The Altamont Council discussed an upgrade to the SCADA System that monitors the Electric Department, but reached no decisions. A full upgrade of the system could cost more than $84,000. The Council did, though, approve extending a water main along 450th Street, north from Muncy Motors to an individual requesting city water service, and granted the Altamont Masonic Lodge permission to conduct a Memorial Day Parade on May 31 at 10am. Dalyne Sapp of Effingham, who was born near Moccasin and is the sister of Keith Tipsword, a Moccasin native who was killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 1941, will serve as the Parade Marshal.

Altamont Council members also approved the annual Appointment Ordinance, with all existing appointments being renewed, and retained Taylor Law Office as the City's legal counsel.
