CASA of Effingham County works to advocate on behalf of children in difficult family situations. A recent event was designed to raise awareness of those efforts and to invite others to get involved.

An event known as "Light the Night" was held earlier this month at Evergreen Hollow Park. A highlight was the lighting of lanterns to represent each of the more than 100 children in Effingham County who are benefited by having a CASA advocate.

CASA is an acronym for Court Appointed Special Advocate. CASA Advocates stay in touch with their children and when court hearings are held, the Advocates appear on behalf of the interests of the children.

Some of the lanterns bore the gender and age of the children, and some lanterns were sponsored by those who wanted to help the program financially. The goal is to make "Light the Night" an annual event.
