Tonight's scheduled special meeting of the Effingham County Board has been canceled.

The Board had been slated to meet in closed session to deliberate as to whether to approve the siting of a proposed new landfill just east of Landfill 33, east of Effingham.

Board Chairman Jim Niemann said the meeting was canceled after Brent Holmes, attorney for the Dan Borries family, filed an objection this morning to the plans to hold the meeting in closed session.

Niemann said the County's attorney in the case, Jennifer Martin, and Effingham County State's Attorney Bryan Kibler both indicated that the Board was within its rights to hold the deliberations in closed session, but said the decision was made to cancel tonight's session to avoid any further concerns.

Instead, the County Board will meet next Thursday, March 11, at 4pm at the Effingham County Office Building, and the meeting will take place in open session. The hearing officer, Larry Clark, will be present for the meeting. Clark has provided the Board with written recommendations and stated in the report that he feels the landfill developers have met all nine siting criteria. Clark was not scheduled to attend tonight's meeting.
