The Effingham County Board's Tax and Finance Committee Thursday recommended Board approval of two resolutions.

One measure opposes the cultural instruction initiative being pursued by the Illinois Board of Education, to be considered on February 16. The other measure opposes House Bill 3653, the criminal justice reform bill that was passed during the fall veto session of the Illinois General Assembly. The full County Board will vote on those measures at their meeting on February 16.

The Committee also endorsed a change to have Shop with a Deputy donations administered by the County's Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #300, rather than through the sheriff's department. Sheriff's Department Detective Darin Deters said the FOP's auditors suggested the change. None of the funds go to the sheriff's department or to the FOP, but only for helping people in need in Effingham County.

Sheriff Dave Mahon said about 100 families benefit from the program each year.
