The Altamont Board of Education Monday hired Dr. David Martin as the next Unit 10 school district superintendent.

Martin is currently serving as Superintendent of the Tennessee School for the Blind. It's a statewide operation. Martin is in his 4th year in the position. He also served as a civilian employee with the US Department of Defense schools in Kentucky including the children of personnel stationed at Ft. Knox and Ft. Campbell, both in Kentucky. Martin also held a similar position in Naples, Italy.

Asked why he was interested in the Altamont position, Martin said he was looking for a smaller school district, but one that was on the move. He had friends from college who lived in Effingham and when he saw the Altamont job posted, he began researching the opportunity.

Martin said he feels that Altamont is a small community that is doing well, but has room to grow.

The Altamont board agreed to a 38-month contract with Martin. He will begin his duties on May 1. Jim Littleford is serving as Altamont's interim superintendent as Dr. Steve Mayerhofer and the Board agreed to part company recently after the Board had earlier decided not to rehire Mayerhofer when his contract was to expire.
