Schmitt Trial Set for December in Sangamon County

Former Effingham resident Gary Schmitt is set to go on trial in December in Sangamon County Circuit Court.
The 56-year-old Schmitt is charged with aggravated criminal sexual assault, two counts of aggravated battery, and a count of unlawful restraint after allegedly attacking a female at McFarland Mental Health Center in Springfield in September.
Schmitt was being held at McFarland after being found not guilty by reason of insanity after killing his father in Effingham and attacking a mother and daughter in Edgewood several years ago.
Schmitt is to go on trial on December 7 at 1:30pm.
