Organized by the DEA, the nationwide event aims to provide a safe, convenient and responsible way to dispose of prescription medications, while also educating the public about the dangers of prescription drug abuse.
"If you have old bottles of pills sitting on a shelf or in a drawer in your house, this is a great opportunity to get rid of them the right way," said U.S. Attorney Weinhoeft. "Simply throwing them in the trash or flushing them down the drain can harm the environment and pollute our water supply, while keeping them around can put loved ones at risk. If we all do our part, we can make sure these medications are properly and safely destroyed."
The Effingham County Sheriff's Office at 101 N. Fourth Street is participating in the Drug Take Back Day from 9 a.m. to noon. From those hours, bring in any prescription tablets, capsules, patches and other solid forms. Liquids, including intravenous solutions, syringes and other sharps and illegal drugs cannot be dropped off. This service is free.
If you cannot come during those hours, there is a box where you can drop off the drugs safely at the Effingham County Sheriff's office.
