Effingham firefighters were called out about noon Tuesday to Treehouse Too, a child care facility in Network Centre High-Tech Park. There was no fire.

Fire Chief Bob Tutko said a staff member at Treehouse Too reported a smell of smoke in a bathroom. Firefighters went onto the roof of the building and found that a belt went bad on a rooftop air-conditioning unit, resulting in the smoke smell.

The building was evacuated briefly, but no one was injured.

The Tuesday call followed a crash Saturday morning where a pickup truck ran off the roadway and knocked down a traffic control sign and severed a power pole.

The incident happened around 9am on Willow Street, south of Fayette Avenue. The elderly driver, traveling alone in the vehicle, was transported by Abbott EMS for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

It could have been much worse, as the photo of the severed pole inside the truck indicates.
