Windsor school district students will remain on remote learning status through the end of the week due to a staff member testing positive for COVID-19.
Windsor Superintendent Erik VanHoveln said the positive test came on August 20. Working with the Shelby County Health Department, VanHoveln said a majority of the teaching staff had to be quarantined, so the district went to remote learning through September 4. Windsor students' first day back in the classroom is to be Tuesday, September 8.
The Board held a special meeting on August 26 to review the matter. VanHoveln said they discussed shutting down until the end of the first quarter and shortening Christmas and Easter break to make up the class days. The public was also allowed to weigh in, some of whom were disappointed at the lack of much notice, but the Board eventually voted to go on remote learning for this week and return to in-school instruction after Labor Day.
The Board also voted to allow sports and other extra curriculars to continue while on remote learning.
Earlier this month, the Windsor board at their regular monthly meeting accepted resignations of junior high Math teacher Julia Thomas, substitute bus driver Carl Pearcy, and 4th grade teacher Julie Bernstein. The Board approved Bailey Leasher as assistant junior high softball coach.
Board members also renewed an annual agreement with the City of Windsor for a school resource officer for 10 hours/week at an hourly rate.
