Two men were in custody after their arrests at Altamont on weapons charges.

Effingham County Sheriff Dave Mahon said 23-year-old Jordan J. Kollman of Effingham and 34-year-old Daniel W. Hoyer of Effingham were arrested by sheriff's deputies just after 6:30am Thursday. The sheriff said the incident came in as a domestic disturbance at an Altamont business, but the vehicle had left the scene when authorities arrived so a stop was made near the four-way stop in Altamont a short time later.

An Effingham city police K9 unit went to the scene to assist and alerted on the vehicle. Officers found two handguns hidden inside the vehicle up under the dashboard. Mahon said the weapons had been stolen a week earlier.

Deputies arrested Kollman and Hoyer on counts of unlawful use of a weapon and possession of stolen firearms, as well as a charge of being armed habitual criminals. Kollman was also arrested on a count of defacing a firearm; Mahon said the serial number had been filed off one of the handguns.

The Effingham County State's Attorney's office will decide on formal charges in the incident.

Mahon thanked Effingham city and Altamont city police for their assistance, saying it's good for the community when law enforcement agencies work together.
