There was a small earthquake this morning near the southern Illinois town of Benton, but its biggest impact seems to be on seismographs.

The magnitude 2.7 quake struck about five this morning about eleven miles east of Benton, near the town of Macedonia.  Police say there have been no reports of damage or injuries.

The quake centered north and west of the New Madrid seismic zone where such activity is not uncommon.
