A September 28 trial date was set Thursday for Edgewood resident Mark Sigrist, charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated domestic battery for injuries he allegedly inflicted on his grandparents July 7.

Kenneth and Nancy Baker of Edgewood were hospitalized after the incident.

The process has also begun for psychologist Dr. Jerry Boyd to examine Sigrist as to his fitness to stand trial. Family members have indicated Sigrist has mental health issues and has dealt with schizophrenia, undergoing treatment on multiple occasions.

A final pretrial hearing for Sigrist was set for September 17. He is being held in Effingham County Jail under $1 million bond.
