A preliminary hearing was set for July 23 during a brief court appearance by Mark Sigrist of Edgewood Tuesday morning.

The 39-year-old Sigrist is charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated domestic battery for injuries he allegedly inflicted on his grandparents last week. Kenneth and Nancy Baker remain hospitalized for treatment of their injuries.

Meanwhile, the process has begun for psychologist Dr. Jerry Boyd to examine Sigrist as to his fitness to stand trial. Family members have indicated Sigrist has mental health issues and has dealt with schizophrenia, undergoing treatment on multiple occasions.

Sigrist made his court appearance on video from Effingham County Jail, as has been the case for most defendants who are in custody at the jail since the COVID-19 outbreak. Sigrist is being held under $1 million bond.

No trial date for Sigrist has been set.
