The St. Anthony Parish Picnic for 2020 has been canceled.
Parishoners got the word on the parish's Facebook page.
The announcement indicated that up until this past week, there were plans for the picnic to be a go. Parish representatives had met with the diocesan lawyer, with Mayor Mike Schutzbach, and with members of the Effingham County Fair Board, and all were in favor of holding a picnic. The notice, though, said it came down to the school kids.
With school scheduled to start shortly after the picnic, any uptick in the numbers could potentially impact the kids going back to school, and that led to the decision to cancel the picnic.
The parish will keep the Big Raffle and the Junior Raffle, with the drawings to take place in August.
