Only 1,178 new positive cases of coronavirus disease were reported Tuesday by the Illinois Department of Public Health. Only 39 additional deaths were reported statewide, the second straight day that less than 40 deaths were reported, perhaps in part due to the Memorial Day holiday.
30 of the deaths were attributed to Cook County.
There is one new area COVID-19 death, in Fayette County. The victim was a man in his 70s.
That's the third COVID-19 related death in Fayette County, and the 20th positive case in the county of 392 people tested. 16 people in Fayette County have recovered.
